What could be more fun than to take on the legend of Ulysses? Each episode offers another chance for pure fun…and that’s what my colleague and I did in 1998. He crafted a story about a group of boys who find a trunk in an attic and in it is an image of a woman, Penelope. Their grandfather quickly concocts a fabulous tale about Penelope.
The songs were a blank canvas. I could do whatever I wanted; so I did. After a lovely song about stories (Treasures) we travel to the island of Cyclops, and a song that is filled with more puns and word play than any I have ever written (More Than Meets The Eye). Next, we check in on Penelope and her ardent suitors (Penelope) where we get some idea of Penelope’s quick wit. Then it’s back to Ulysses as he travels to meet Hades, who is a little bored of his job (Going Nowhere Fast). The Sirens then tempt Ulysses and crew in a pretty complicated song (Siren Song). Back in Ithaca, Penelope again delays a decision by having the suitors dance for attention (Ithaca Men). Ulysses returns and everyone sings a Beach Boys inspired tune (Ithaca Girl), with no sign of the bloody vengeance from the actual story.
I appreciate your comments. Enjoy.
THE SONGS: Missing Song “Going Nowhere Fast”, “Ithaca Men”, “Ithaca Girl”.
