Anyone who knows me knows that I have had a love of basketball since I was, about 10. Let’s be clear, I am not built for basketball, but what I lack in physical prowess I more than make up for in determination. My music room for years was right next to the gym, so in between classes I would shoot, and shoot, and shoot. In 1986 my love of basketball collided with my issues with my father to produce “On The line”, a 30-minute musical staged on the basketball court. What stirred the plot was my revulsion at the way tv portrayed fathers, not as they really were, but as supermen who could solve any problem in 30 minutes, minus commercials. The list was endless and none of them came close to my experience. So I wrote a musical about a kid who shoots foul shots by himself and has an absentee father. Sound familiar? The climax of the musical is a remarkable opportunity for our protagonist to actually make a shot in a real game, but, life is never as simple as a tv show.
